Spring 2010 - COR is named Site of Clinical Excellence by Columbia University!

Columbia University, the fifth-oldest higher education institution in the United States, has named our organization the 2010 winner of the Site of Clinical Excellence award! Churchill Orthopedic Rehabilitation is the first outpatient orthopedic physical therapy facility to ever receive this award. Past recipients are some of the finest medical institutions on the East Coast and, some would argue, in the world!  These include such highly regarded facilities as Columbia University Medical Center, New York Presbyterian Hospital, NYU-Rusk Institute, Mt. Sinai Medical Center, and NY Presbyterian-Cornell Medical Center.

The faculty at Columbia chose COR for this award because of our high standards of personalized patient care, along with our involvement in the education of new physical therapists, and our constant advocacy for the profession of physical therapy.  COR was honored at the 2010 Columbia University graduation, where our own Steve Churchill, PT, co-owner of our practice and clinic manager for the Tuesday / Thursday / Saturday team, spoke to the 43 Doctor of Physical Therapy graduates who were inspired by our unique philosophies.

We would like to thank the faculty at Columbia University for this amazing honor, and we commit to continue delivering the same excellent care and superior results to all our patients!

If you would like to schedule an appointment for preventive care, a screening, or for help with an injury or any other physical challenge, please give us a call at 201-833-1333! We would love to hear from you.

April 2010 - COR's Dr. Ben Burton Receives UMDNJ's Alumni Award!

The COR team is proud to announce that our own Dr. Ben Burton, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, ATC, CSCS has been chosen by the faculty of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey as their 2010 Alumni Award Recipient!

Recipients are selected for their dedication and exemplary contributions to the profession of physical therapy.  This annual award is part of the convocation program that precedes graduation. Ben will be speaking to the graduates and their families about our practice, our customer service philosophies, our focus on Direct Access, and our many innovative, non-surgical, pain-free treatment systems that Ben has pioneered.

Recipients of UMDNJ’s Alumni Award are selected from over a thousand graduates of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program since its inception 30 years ago.  Nancy Kirsch, Director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, said that Ben “represent[s] a proud tradition of clinicians who have made a significant impact on the practice of physical therapy.”

We would like to congratulate Ben on this achievement, and we are proud to carry on his tradition of excellent care and unparalleled results for our patients.

If you would like to book an appointment, please call us at 201-833-1333! We would be happy to help you.

New in 2010! - Churchill Orthopedic Rehabilitation partners with Pectus Services' Joe Porcello in the treatment of Pectus Carinatum and Pectus Excavatum

In keeping with our goal of staying on the cutting edge of the newest techniques, we are now the first Pectus Treatment & Rehabilitation physical therapy facility in the country!

The terms Pectus Carinatum and Pectus Excavatum describe deformities of the chest wall or “Pectus”.  Pectus Excavatum is more commonly known as "sunken chest," and Pectus Carinatum is referred to as "protruding" or "pigeon chest."  These conditions are little-known by most in the medical field – in fact, for years, surgery was thought to be the only option to correct a Pectus defect.  But Joe Porcello, ATC, has become a worldwide expert in non-surgical treatment for all Pectus deformities.  He is the founder of Pectus Services, a company based solely on helping children and teens with these defects.  Joe is also the creator of the T-Joe Pectus Bracing System, as well as the only comprehensive Pectus Improvement Program available.

The Pectus Services treatment philosophy states that improvement of a Pectus deformity involves more than just a brace.  It includes several components: a thorough exam and diagnosis by a thoracic surgeon, and then a comprehensive improvement program of exercise and bracing is developed using their world-renowned "T-Joe" Pectus Bracing System. Joe provides one-on-one care for each child and great customer service from the very first phone call.  Like Joe, we at Churchill Orthopedic Rehab believe that in order to be effective healthcare providers, we need to focus on the whole patient and their entire experience, not just a specific body part or exercise.

Over the past few months, our providers have been training directly with "T-Joe" himself regarding Pectus and its effects on the body.  We are proud to partner with Joe in the treatment of his patients.  We share his passion for helping kids with Pectus attain outstanding results, as well as gain confidence and strength.  We look forward to meeting more Pectus patients and helping them on their journey to better Pectus health!

If you or your child is affected by a Pectus condition, please call Pectus Services at 877-PECTUS-NO-MORE (877-732-8876), or visit them on the web at www.PectusServices.com!

If you are interested in continuing your T-Joe Pectus Improvement Program with us, including pre-surgery therapy before a Nuss procedure, or before bracing for Pectus Carinatum patients, please call us to set up an appointment at 201-833-1333!

Churchill Orthopedic Rehabilitation invites you to join us in celebrating the opening of the John Davis and Dr. M. Benjamin Burton Athletic Training & Sports Medicine Center at Montclair State University!

We would like to invite all our past and current patients, friends of the business, and everyone else who may wish to join us, to Montclair State University (MSU) to celebrate a special honor bestowed upon our own Dr. Ben Burton: MSU has chosen Ben as the namesake for their new athletic training center!

MSU approached Ben last year regarding this honor. Initially, he humbly turned them down. But then, the thought occurred to him that this would be a great opportunity to thank his ATC mentor John Davis by including John’s name! John has been an integral part of the Athletic Training department at MSU for the past 25 years, and is currently Head Athletic Trainer. He was one of the first to offer Ben great opportunity back when Ben was still a student. Ben remains grateful to John for his guidance over the years, and is looking forward to honoring his mentor in this meaningful way!

The Montclair State University Department of Athletics has opened their doors to all of us in celebration of the opening of the John Davis and Dr. M. Benjamin Burton Athletic Training & Sports Medicine Center, and in recognition of John’s and Ben’s many contributions to the ATC field over the years.

Please join our team for the dedication ceremony to congratulate Ben and John! Feel free to bring as many guests as you would like.

The ceremony will take place on March 28, 2010 from 2pm until 4pm, at MSU’s Panzer Athletic Center, 1 Normal Ave, Montclair, NJ 07043.

Please RSVP by March 24, 2010 to Randye Mitrani from the Montclair State Athletics Department at 973-655-5234, or via e-mail at mitranir@mail.montclair.edu. If you have any questions about the dedication ceremony Randye will be glad to answer them for you.

Montclair State University has the first Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training degree program in the state! If you are interested in pursuing your Athletic Training degree, please visit their website at http://www.montclair.edu/ATE to learn more!

Winter 2010 - COR's first Coat Drive is a success thanks to our patients!

COR clinician John Dunn and Lead Facility Assistant Amy Foschini teamed up to conduct a coat drive for the Englewood Public School systems! One of our phenomenal patients, Bernadette M., told John that many families both in the Englewood school system and surrounding areas were in need of such basic necessities as warm coats, hats, gloves, and scarves.

The COR team, along with our generous patients, pulled together to donate more than 35 coats and numerous scarves, hats, and gloves in just three weeks' time! Bernadette volunteered to pick up the items and drop them off to the parent liaison, Florence Eddings, who dispersed each item to those families who she knew were in need.

We would like to thank our patients for their many contributions!  Thanks to you, more families are able to keep warm this chilly winter.  You have uplifted our team and warmed our hearts!

Keep your eyes open for another Coat Drive coming in October of this year!

September 2009 - The COR Team Participates in “Tools for School” For Children in Need

Churchill Orthopedic Rehabilitation was excited to assist with the Tools for School program this summer!   Working with the Volunteer Center of Bergen County and their partners, we did our best to help meet their goal of collecting $35,000 worth of school supplies to distribute to needy children, so kids can start their year with confidence.

Aided by the generosity of our patients, the COR team was able to provide dozens of school supplies for children ranging from Pre-K to 12th grade.  The notebooks, pencils, folders, and many other supplies were then dropped off to the Center for Food Action in Englewood, NJ – a major resource for many low-income families.

The Churchill team would like to thank all who contributed to this donation, and made it possible for so many students to go back to school with everything they’ll need to be successful!  Keep an eye out for COR’s upcoming holiday volunteer projects – we so appreciate the support of our patients in our mission to help those in need!

If you would like to get involved with Tools for School or another local charity, you can contact the Volunteer Center of Bergen County at 201-489-9454 or visit them on the web at www.bergenvolunteers.org.

August 2009 - COR Clinicians John Dunn and Dr. Phil Lombardo work together to conquer TMJ

Two of our clinicians have been teaming up to advance COR's leadership in the physical therapy field, in an effort to help even more people return to good health. Dr. Phil Lombardo has been training with fellow team member John Dunn to expand his knowledge in the area of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ).

TMJ disorders affect the jaw, the neck, and the muscles that control all jaw movement.  They are characterized most often by pain in the face, jaw, neck, and/or varying degrees of headaches.  With over 35 million people experiencing TMJ concerns in the United States, it is a very common -- and often misunderstood -- condition.  John and Phil's flourishing expertise in this area will help clarify these issues and return our TMJ patients to a fuller function.

John is recognized by dentists, oral surgeons, and other medical professionals in all of Bergen County as the provider of choice for TMJ concerns.  He is a Certified Cervical and Temporomandibular Therapist (CCTT) and has had over 37 years of experience.  His skills are further enhanced by his certification as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT).

This training is part of Phil's ongoing effort to continue the advancement of his physical therapy career, and he is enthusiastic about taking this opportunity to expand his base of knowledge and proficiency.  In addition to being one of only eight PTs in the state of New Jersey to be Board Certified in Sports (SCS), he is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

Like the rest of the COR team, Phil and John's extensive training with COR's owners, Dr. Ben Burton and Steve Churchill, has continually enhanced their effectiveness, strengthened their outcomes, and greatly improved the success of their patients.

If you would like to set up an appointment with Phil or John, please call our office anytime at 201-833-1333 and we will be happy to assist you!

October 3, 2008 - John Dunn joins COR

We at COR are proud to announce the addition of John Dunn to our practice.  John joined us in July of 2008 after closing the doors of his very popular practice in Fort Lee, called “Community Physical Therapy.”  After 27 years there, John notes that he enjoyed every moment, but at this point in his career, would like to focus all of his attention on providing exceptional patient care.

John has been a practicing PT for over 30 years and during that time has gained advanced specialty in the area of Tempero-mandibular disorders (commonly known as TMJ).  He is recognized by MD’s and patients alike throughout the county as an expert in non-invasive treatment of TMJ disorders.

We would like to welcome John to our team, as well as many of John’s dedicated patients who have followed him here.

September 27, 2008 – Local physical therapists reach out to help animals in need

Englewood, NJ - Local physical therapists reached out in an effort to help a local animal shelter care for animals in need.  Save The Animals Rescue Team II (S.T.A.R.T. II), started in 1989, is a non-profit organization, dedicated to alleviating the plight of homeless and abandoned companion animals. Twice a week they visit a local pound and take as many adoptable animals as they can. These animals are provided veterinary care, clean living conditions, exercise and socialization.  Since their inception, they have rescued and placed over 7,000 dogs and cats.  The team is centered in Englewood, NJ and was featured in the classic book, Chicken Soup for the Soul, by Jack Canfield and Mark Hansen.  Funding for the trip was provided by donations raised at COR.  While at the shelter, the COR team helped out by walking the dogs and helping to clean up, while providing company and a break for the regular hard working volunteers.

Churchill Orthopedic Rehabilitation is a physical therapist-owned practice in Teaneck, NJ.  Established in 2003, the center is the premier practice for sports and orthopedic physical therapy in northern New Jersey.  Outreach like this trip to the shelter is in keeping with COR’s mission to always treat the whole patient—emotional and physical.

July 21, 2008 - Dr. Julie Ulbrich: Board Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist

We at COR are proud to announce that Julie Ulbrich has recently passed her Board Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist exam.

According to the National Stength and Conditioning Association, the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credential identifies individuals who possess the knowledge and skills to design and implement safe and effective strength training and conditioning programs for athletes in a team setting.  Julie has successfully met all criteria and mastered the knowledge base unique to the specialized area of strength training for athletes of all ages.  Julie is recognized with the initials “CSCS” added to her list of credentials.

This year, Julie was also recognized for her physical therapy aptitude when she was invited to Columbia University’s Nursing program.  Based on her expertise, she was asked to lecture on the benefits of proper body mechanics for nurses when transferring patients.

We would like to congratulate Julie for all of her continued hard work and dedication to our patients and to her own professional development.

April 2, 2008 - COR celebrates 5 year anniversary

We were very proud to celebrate 5 years of service to our patients throughout northern New Jersey.  It has been Steve and Ben’s continual goal not only to provide excellent care and exceed every patient’s expectations, but also to develop successful individuals.

COR is proud of each of our associates’ commitment to the team, and thus our outstanding performance and productivity.  Our opportunities for both personal and professional growth and advancement are among the best, and the way we implement all of our basic tenets is what makes us truly proud of this business.
